Democrats may have overplayed their hand and fanned on this attempt to derail Donald Trump. The former president is fighting back in a criminal case that has national implications.
If Trump is convicted, Democrats could use the outcome to attack Trump on the campaign trail. Even more lawsuits could be brought to dump him off the 2024 presidential election ballot.
The problem for Democrats is that their trump card prosecutor in Georgia has a skeleton in her closet that has been revealed. A once secret relationship is now out in the open and Trump’s team wants a judge to dismiss an indictment against him. The motion claims the district attorney and her prosecutor shouldn’t be on the case.

Trump’s lawyers filed their motion telling Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee that the former president is adopting co-defendant Mike Roman’s Jan. 8 motion that alleged “an improper intimate personal relationship” between District Attorney Fani Willis and her hired special prosecutor Nathan Wade. The motion claimed that “taxpayer monies were used by Wade to take the DA on lavish vacations.”
This is one of those situations where reality is more wild than a sordid TV show about secret relationships and who’s hooking up with whom. The details from court filings were revealing.
Roman alleged in court documents that Willis and Wade participated in an “improper, clandestine personal relationship.” The connection between the two allegedly included Wade paying for vacations for himself and Willis. There were also claims that the special prosecutor has been paid more than $650,000 by the district attorney even though there are questions about his lack of experience with such a high-profile case.
Roman’s allegations prompted Willis to defend Wade’s qualifications during a church speech where she claimed the two were being targeted based on their race. That brought the ire of Trump’s legal team.
Trump’s attorneys characterized Willis’s public speech as “extrajudicial statements designed to defend against, as well as divert and deflect attention from, the alleged misconduct outlined in Roman’s motion.”
The Willis and Wade connection was exposed during divorce court proceedings involving Wade’s wife, Joycelyn Wade. Records in the case allegedly show Wade purchasing airline tickets for himself and Willis related to trips to Miami and San Francisco in the last two years. Roman’s lawyer, Ashleigh Merchant, told the media that she plans to subpoena Willis, Wade, and a current and former law partner of Wade.
“We’ve got a lot of information,” Merchant said. “We’ve got a lot of documents and a lot of witnesses.”
The case against Trump is part of a case filed by Willis in August that charged the former president and 18 others with racketeering. Four co-defendants have pleaded guilty while Trump and the remaining defendants pleaded not guilty. The four who pleaded guilty struck plea agreement deals with the prosecutor before the latest revelations about Willis and Wade were exposed.
A trial date for Trump and the others has not been set, although Willis is asking for an August date.
