Three GOP Leaders Introduce New Bill, Which Would Completely Erase Dept. Of Education

For generations, conservatives have waited patiently as Republican leaders promised to roll back federal overreach in a key area affecting American families. Campaign after campaign, we heard the promises. Election after election, we voted in hope. Yet somehow, the bloated bureaucracy not only survived but thrived, growing its budget and extending its tentacles deeper into our daily lives. Until now.

Three Republican Senators have finally stepped up to fulfill one of conservatism’s longest-standing promises. Their bold new legislation puts teeth behind President Trump’s recent executive actions and proves that this time, Republicans mean business.

So what exactly are these lawmakers targeting? Nothing less than the complete abolition of one of the most controversial federal departments.

From ‘The Daily Caller’:

“Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky, Mike Lee of Utah and Bernie Moreno of Ohio introduced the bill in a ‘commitment to decentralization and individual freedom, aiming for a high-quality education free from federal interference,’ according to a press release. If passed, the Department of Education would be fully terminated on Dec. 31, 2026.”

That’s right – Senators Paul, Lee, and Moreno have introduced legislation to completely eliminate the Department of Education by the end of 2026. Let me tell you, I’ve been waiting for this moment for decades. This bold move aligns perfectly with President Trump’s March 20th executive order directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin dismantling the agency. While Trump got the ball rolling, full abolition requires congressional approval – which is exactly what these senators aim to deliver.

“Since its creation 45 years ago, the Department of Education has presided over a decline in academic achievement, skyrocketing college costs, and the woke takeover of our schools,” Senator Lee told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “It’s past time that we fully return education to the states and eliminate this unconstitutional federal agency.”

Fulfilling a Four-Decade Conservative Promise

The push to abolish the Department of Education isn’t new. In fact, the Republican Party has been promising this move since the department’s creation under President Jimmy Carter in 1979. President Reagan campaigned on eliminating it in 1980. Yet despite decades of conservative rhetoric, the agency not only survived but expanded its power and budget considerably.

Can anyone honestly say our kids are better educated after 45 years of federal control? I certainly can’t. The evidence points in exactly the opposite direction.

Senator Moreno didn’t mince words about the constitutional issues at stake: “There is no constitutional role for the federal government in education, and returning power to the states will empower parents, cut red tape, and give our students the opportunity to receive the best possible education.”

The evidence for the department’s failure is overwhelming. Under its watch, American students have fallen behind internationally, while the agency has increasingly focused on pushing left-wing ideology like critical race theory, gender ideology, and DEI initiatives rather than actual academic achievement. All while spending billions of taxpayer dollars with little accountability. (And they have the nerve to ask for more money every year!)

The Left’s Predictable Resistance

As expected, Democrats are throwing a fit. A coalition of 20 blue states and Washington D.C. has already filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over early staff cuts at the department, claiming states will suffer “immense damage” – an ironic claim considering the damage federal education policies have already inflicted on American students. (Funny how they never worried about the “immense damage” to kids who can’t read at grade level, isn’t it?)

This legislation represents much more than just trimming government fat. It’s about restoring decision-making to where it belongs: with parents, local communities, and state governments who actually know what their children need. It’s about ending the one-size-fits-all approach that has failed our students for generations.

Secretary McMahon hasn’t wasted any time either. She’s already cut nearly half the department’s staff and begun shifting key functions to other agencies. (And yes, the educational bureaucrats are already panicking.) The student loan program and services for students with disabilities will continue – they’ll just be managed more efficiently by different departments.

What we’re witnessing is the conservative approach in action: thoughtful reorganization that maintains essential services while eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy.

Reclaiming Education for American Families

The abolition of the Department of Education would mark a turning point for American education. Without federal micromanagement, states can innovate, parents can have greater input, and teachers can focus on teaching rather than complying with endless federal mandates.

For parents and grandparents who’ve watched in dismay as schools became laboratories for progressive social experiments rather than centers of academic excellence, this move represents long-overdue relief.

The Republican senators introducing this bill deserve our support and gratitude. After decades of promises, they’re finally taking concrete action to return control of education to where it constitutionally belongs.

President Trump started the process with his executive order, and now Congress has the opportunity to finish the job. Let’s hope they follow through and finally deliver on this essential conservative promise.

Our children’s education is too important to be left in the hands of Washington bureaucrats. It’s time to put parents and communities back in charge.

Key Takeaways:

    • GOP Senators Paul, Lee, and Moreno introduced legislation to completely abolish the Department of Education by 2026
    • The bill supports Trump’s executive order and fulfills a 40-year Republican promise to eliminate this unconstitutional agency
    • Since its creation in 1979, the Department has overseen declining test scores while pushing left-wing ideology in schools
    • Control of education will return to states and communities where it constitutionally belongs, empowering parents and improving outcomes
