Texas is arguably the most influential red state in the nation heading into the 2024 presidential election primary season after the first of the year. GOP candidates must win Texas to get into the White House.
Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has made his presence known in party circles over the past few years. He is a three-term governor with political clout at the state and national levels. He has also challenged the Biden administration on multiple fronts ranging from public health policies, school issues, and the ongoing border crisis that hurts the people of Texas.
Abbott recently joined former President Donald Trump before a speaking event to serve lunch for Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and Texas National Guardsmen deployed along the southern border under the governor’s Operation Lone Star program.
The two readily handed out tacos and tamales on Sunday during the event in border town of Edinburg, Texas during Abbott’s annual pre-Thanksgiving meal. Abbott also handed the 45th president a special gift and announced it to all the world.
From Fox News:
“Today, I am proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for President,” Abbott said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Now more than ever, America needs a President who will secure the border and prioritize national security. President Trump is the clear choice to get the job done.”
Trump, who endorsed Abbott in 2021 for reelection, arrived in Texas in an effort to highlight the contentious issue of illegal immigration that is affecting U.S. border security. The issue has been a major focus for Republicans for years. The GOP, from voters to politicians at the state and national levels, have criticized the Biden administration for its handling of the crisis. Illegal crossings have surged under Biden.
Trump has launched new campaign pledges that would enact the largest mass deportation effort in American history if he is re-elected. He wants to bring back his 2019 “Remain in Mexico” program. The program forced non-Mexican asylum to wait in Mexico for the resolution of their cases before entering the U.S. at the southern border.
Trump and Abbott have a history of working together. Trump’s 2021 endorsement helped Abbott fend off multiple primary challenges from the right and overwhelmingly win his third term as governor.
The 45th president wants to get back to the White House and is in his third run for the nation’s highest office. He is currently the overwhelming front-runner for the Republican 2024 nomination. The next closest candidates have been unable to mount a significant challenge against Trump.
Trump holds the historic tag as the first former or current president in American history to be criminally indicted. Four indictments to date have only fired up his support among Republican voters, and he has even made recent gains in the polls among traditional Democrat voters as Biden’s support crumbles.
