While California burns, its political elite are playing with matches of a different kind—the kind that ignite power grabs, not relief efforts. It’s an old story, really: those in power fiddling with their schemes while ordinary citizens watch their lives turn to ash. But even by Washington standards—and trust me, those are low—what’s happening in the Golden State right now takes the cake—or perhaps we should say, takes the ice cream.

Tens of thousands of California fire victims are struggling to find money to rebuild their homes. Many face the heartbreaking choice of selling their lots rather than rebuilding, simply because they lack the cash. The much-publicized FireAid concert managed to raise $100 million, but very little of that money has actually reached the victims who need it most. These are families who’ve lost everything, waiting for help that never seems to arrive. (Funny how quickly help arrives when politicians need votes, isn’t it?)

Meanwhile, in Sacramento and Washington, there’s plenty of money flowing—just not where you’d hope. The political machine is well-oiled and running at full speed, with donors opening their wallets wide for the right cause. The question is: what cause could possibly be more important than helping desperate fire victims? If you guessed “keeping Democrats in power,” give yourself a gold star.

Here’s your answer—and I wish I were making this up: Nancy Pelosi, now 85 years old, is secretly driving Governor Gavin Newsom’s effort to raise over $200 million—not for fire victims, but for creating new gerrymandered districts in California. Yes, you read that correctly. While families sift through the ashes of their homes, Pelosi is working the phones to ensure Democrats maintain their death grip on power.

From ‘New York Times’:
Ms. Pelosi would begin with pleasantries, according to three people granted anonymity to discuss private fund-raising calls made that day. Then she would hand the phone to Mr. Newsom to close the deal. The choreography was partly borne of a mindfulness of tangled federal rules about soliciting outsized checks, and partly out of deference to Mr. Newsom.

Power Before People

Let that sink in for a moment. They’ve literally choreographed their grift. This dance between Pelosi and Newsom reveals everything wrong with California’s leadership. They’ve perfected the art of raising money—just not for the people who desperately need it. Pelosi’s “early endorsement served as a permission slip” for lawmakers to abandon any pretense of putting constituents first. Even Eric Holder, the former attorney general, abandoned his commitment to nonpartisan mapmaking after consulting with her.

The redistricting measure, dubbed Proposition 50, could exceed $200 million in campaign spending. That’s twice what FireAid raised, and unlike the concert funds, this money will definitely reach its intended destination: the pockets of political consultants and the coffers of power. (Shocking, I know.)

The Pelosi Pattern

This shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s watched Pelosi over the years. Remember, this is the same woman who showed off her $24-a-pint ice cream collection during the pandemic while small businesses were forced to close. The same politician who’s made millions through conveniently timed stock trades that would land ordinary citizens in jail. The same person who dramatically ripped up President Trump’s State of the Union speech while preaching about civility.

I’ve watched California politics for years, but even I’m amazed at the audacity here. At 85, she’s still pulling strings behind the scenes, treating California’s tragedy as an opportunity for political gain. The New York Times calls her a “linchpin” in financing this ballot campaign, pushing “top contributors to activate their networks with uncommon urgency.” Urgency for redistricting? Absolutely. Urgency for fire victims? Not so much.

Is this really what California has become? A state where the political elite can raise $200 million to protect their power while fire victims get thoughts, prayers, and empty promises? Where an 85-year-old former Speaker is more concerned with drawing district lines than helping families draw up rebuilding plans?

The contrast is as stark as it is shameful. And it tells you everything you need to know about Democrat priorities in 2025. But hey, at least Pelosi’s ice cream didn’t melt.

Key Takeaways

  • Pelosi is raising $200 million for redistricting while fire victims struggle
  • Democrats prioritize gerrymandering over disaster relief for Californians
  • At 85, Pelosi still pulls strings behind closed political scenes
  • Fire victims got $100 million; political power grabs get double
