Some flames, no matter how violently the wind howls, simply refuse to die. When Charlie Kirk was assassinated last September at Utah Valley University, the conservative movement lost one of its most tireless voices—a young man who built Turning Point USA into a powerhouse that mobilized an entire generation. Plenty of critics were happy to write the obituary for TPUSA alongside its founder. They were wrong.

Charlie Kirk’s relationship with Hillsdale College ran deep. He was a devoted student of its online courses, learning directly from President Larry Arnn and the faculty he admired. I’ve always thought that said something about Charlie—the guy could’ve rested on his platform, but he kept learning. He spoke on campus just months before his death, and Arnn considered him among the best young minds he’d ever encountered. Not for his fame. For his relentless pursuit of truth.

When Erika Kirk stepped into the role of TPUSA CEO days after burying her husband, few were surprised. The mainstream press barely covered it, of course—doesn’t fit the narrative when a conservative widow refuses to crumble. She had stood beside Charlie for years, sharing his faith and his fight. Now she would lead the organization he built.

This week, Hillsdale announced she’ll do something more.

Erika Kirk will address the Class of 2026 as commencement speaker on May 9, delivering remarks at the institution her husband loved so dearly.

From Hillsdale College President Larry Arnn:
Charlie Kirk became a national and international sensation, and he built something amazing. At his memorial service were the great, the near-great, and tens of millions watching. But that isn’t why we loved him. We loved him because he was, at heart, a student who worked hard to get it right. Erika Kirk, brave and widowed, intends to carry on. And we will help her.

An Honor Befitting the Moment

The college will also confer honorary doctorates on both Charlie and Erika Kirk during the ceremony—placing them among recipients like Justice Clarence Thomas, Victor Davis Hanson, and Bishop Robert Barron. For an institution that famously refuses federal funding to preserve its independence, these honors mean something. When’s the last time Harvard could say that? Exactly.

Erika holds degrees from Arizona State and Liberty University. She’s led Christian ministry initiatives and guided TPUSA through its most difficult chapter. Her response to the invitation reflected the weight she clearly feels.

“Hillsdale represents something rare in our time—a steadfast devotion to faith, learning, and the principles that sustain a free nation,” she said.

Why This Matters

There’s a certain poetry in this choice, and I don’t think it’s accidental. Hillsdale doesn’t chase headlines or celebrity speakers. They choose people who embody what they teach—that ideas matter, that character counts, that faith and freedom are inseparable. Erika Kirk, stepping onto that stage eight months after losing her husband to an assassin’s bullet, represents all of it.

The ceremony will be closed to the public but livestreamed for those who want to witness it. I suspect many of us will be tuning in.

Will you be watching?
