DOGE Squad Takes Aim at Another Sacred Cow of Government Waste

Finally! Someone is taking a machete to the overgrown jungle of government waste. I’ve been waiting years to see a president with the courage to challenge these bloated agencies, and Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is honestly the best thing his administration has done.

While the left is predictably melting down, American taxpayers have reason to celebrate as DOGE continues its mission to trim the fat from our bloated federal bureaucracy. Led by business genius Elon Musk, this small but mighty team has been methodically identifying and eliminating wasteful spending that’s been draining our treasury for decades.

The latest target? Another so-called “untouchable” agency that’s been burning through hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars every year with little accountability. As with previous DOGE interventions, we’re seeing the usual chorus of outrage from the left, but the real question is: why has it taken so long for someone to take a hard look at these sacred cows?

Just last Friday, DOGE began reviewing the Wilson Center, a foreign policy think tank that has drained taxpayer resources for years. About 130 employees were placed on leave as the team dug into their operations. But that was just the appetizer. The main course has just been served, and I’m personally thrilled to see it.

From ‘Fox Business’:
The Department of Government Efficiency, which is led by Elon Musk, arrived Friday at U.S. Peace Corps headquarters in Washington, D.C., suggesting it could be the latest target of the Trump administration’s efforts to downsize the federal workforce.

That’s right – the Peace Corps, that darling of the global do-gooder set, is finally getting a long-overdue examination. Established in 1961 by President Kennedy, this agency has been sending Americans abroad for decades, operating with an annual budget of more than $400 million. Let’s be honest – most Americans couldn’t tell you what the Peace Corps actually accomplishes with all that money. While it sounds noble on paper, the question remains: Is this massive expenditure truly delivering value to American taxpayers?

The agency confirmed DOGE’s arrival in a statement: “Staff from the Department of Government Efficiency are currently working at Peace Corps headquarters and the agency is supporting their requests.” Translation: the efficiency experts are in the building, and the bureaucrats are clutching their pearls while taxpayers are cheering.

Decades of Unchecked Spending

The Peace Corps has been burning through taxpayer dollars for over 60 years with minimal oversight. Despite its massive budget – over $430 million annually – the agency has been struggling to meet even its basic staffing goals. According to the agency’s own data, its “fill rate” (the measure of its ability to accommodate volunteer requests) has plummeted from 94% in 2019 to a dismal 63% in 2023.

Even more outrageous? Biden’s administration had the audacity to request an increase to $479 million for this underperforming agency. Why should we continue funding an agency that can’t even fill its positions? That’s nearly half a billion dollars sent overseas while American communities struggle with infrastructure challenges, border security issues, and economic hardships. Is sending volunteers to foreign countries really the best use of these resources when our own citizens need help?

When the Peace Corps was established during the Cold War, America was engaged in a global ideological battle. But times have changed, and so should our spending priorities. Over 240,000 Americans have served as Peace Corps volunteers – at enormous taxpayer expense. While the experience might be enriching for the volunteers, the return on investment for American citizens is questionable at best.

America First in Action

This isn’t just about one agency. The Peace Corps review represents a fundamental shift in how our government operates. President Trump promised to put America First, and DOGE is delivering on that promise by systematically examining every nook and cranny of the federal government where wasteful spending might be hiding.

The model is working. DOGE has already identified significant cuts at various agencies, including USAID and the Wilson Center. Each dollar saved is a dollar that can be returned to taxpayers or redirected to core American priorities – securing our border, rebuilding our infrastructure, and strengthening our military.

Critics claim these efforts are “dismantling” important institutions, but they never explain why these institutions deserve eternal funding without accountability. If the Peace Corps or any other agency can’t justify its budget, why should it continue receiving hundreds of millions in taxpayer funds? That’s not cruel – it’s common sense.

The arrival of DOGE at an agency has often been followed by necessary cuts and restructuring. For too long, these agencies have operated like fiefdoms, immune from the basic accountability that every American family and business faces daily.

I’ve never seen anything like DOGE in my lifetime – an actual government entity dedicated to reducing government itself. The days of blank checks for government agencies are over. Finally, we have an administration with the courage to question the unquestionable and cut the uncuttable. American taxpayers have been footing the bill for too long, and DOGE is our long-awaited champion.

As DOGE continues its vital work, remember this: Every dollar saved from government waste is a victory for the American people. The Peace Corps may have enjoyed bipartisan protection for decades, but no agency should be above scrutiny when it comes to how it spends our money. In Trump and Musk, we finally have the leadership willing to ask the tough questions and demand real answers.

Key Takeaways

  • Peace Corps efficiency has plummeted, with fill rates dropping from 94% to 63% while still consuming massive taxpayer resources.
  • The systematic review of “untouchable” agencies represents Trump’s America First approach in action.
  • Previous DOGE targets have seen significant restructuring, saving millions in taxpayer dollars.
