Catholic Theology Professor Confronts Texas Senate Hopeful James Talarico Over Abortion Claim During CNN Town Hall

Every election cycle, some new progressive politician discovers the Bible. They learn just enough Scripture to sound dangerous. They drape themselves in the language of faith, then turn around and advocate for policies that would send any Sunday school teacher into cardiac arrest. It’s a grift with a long pedigree – the seminary credential deployed like a campaign prop, carefully curated verses trotted out to justify whatever the secular left demands this season.

But something revealing happens when these politicians step outside friendly studios and face actual believers – men and women who’ve spent lifetimes studying the Word and living their convictions without a camera crew present. The performance crumbles. And last Wednesday night, on live television, it crumbled in spectacular fashion.

From the Daily Wire:

A Christian voter put Texas Democrat James Talarico on blast Wednesday night, shredding his claim that the “Bible is silent on the issue of abortion” and challenging the Senate hopeful to reconcile his pro-abortion stance with the commandment: “Thou shalt not kill.”

Jody Hunt, a Catholic theology professor, pushed back against Talarico’s theological defense of abortion during a live CNN town hall and challenged him to explain why he would not vote to protect the unborn.

So here we have a Presbyterian seminarian running for a Texas Senate seat against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, who apparently believed he could stroll into a CNN town hall, wave away two thousand years of Christian moral teaching, and walk out with his credibility intact. Bold strategy. It did not work.

“The Bible is silent” – and other absurdities

Talarico’s central claim is staggering in its brazenness. The Bible, he told the audience, is “silent on the issue of abortion.” He then recast the killing of unborn children as merely a “public health problem,” stripping the moral weight clean off the act with the clinical detachment of a man who knows his position collapses under ethical scrutiny.

Hunt dismantled him in seconds. “The Bible is not silent on abortion. There is the Ten Commandments: ‘Thou shalt not kill,'” she responded. “And as Catholics, we take great insult … when it’s described that way.”

This is the standard progressive playbook. Take a profound moral question. Reclassify it as a sterile policy debate. Then accuse anyone who objects of being unsophisticated. Talarico even tipped his hand, complaining that people “use it to kind of beat each other over the head” and insisting abortion should be treated as a “public policy problem” rather than a “theological debate.” In plain English: stop letting your faith inform your politics. Awfully convenient advice from a man whose entire campaign trades on his seminary credentials.

A man who believes whatever the room requires

The abortion exchange wasn’t even the most damaging moment of the evening. Christian small-business owner Sarah Gardner challenged Talarico over “concerning things” he’s said – statements she argued call into question the “authenticity” of his faith. Top of the list: his declaration that “God is nonbinary” and his stated belief that there are six genders.

His defense? He admitted he was “being provocative.” So he leveraged the nature of God Almighty as a rhetorical stunt. Good to have that on the record.

Then came the real unraveling. Talarico told the town hall audience he believes Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life.” Perfectly orthodox. One problem – in an unearthed 2023 sermon, he preached the precise opposite. “There are so many pathways to the sacred,” he declared. “God is not a Christian.” In that same message, he compared evangelism to forcing alcohol on children. His church has also funded abortions and transgender summer camps, according to previous Daily Wire reporting.

Which James Talarico should voters trust? The one performing orthodoxy under CNN’s lights, or the one preaching universalism from the pulpit when he assumes only sympathetic ears are listening? A man who reshapes his theology based on his audience isn’t wrestling with hard doctrinal questions. He’s a fraud. And frauds have no business holding public office.

What Texas voters actually saw

Wednesday’s town hall didn’t surface a routine policy disagreement. It revealed a pattern – a candidate who tailors his stated creed to whatever room he occupies, banking on the hope that nobody compares notes. Jody Hunt and Sarah Gardner compared them, on live television, and Talarico had nowhere to hide.

Texans of faith don’t need their senator to share every doctrinal conviction. But they have every right to demand basic honesty about what a candidate actually believes. The voters in that town hall demonstrated exactly what faithful, clear-eyed citizenship looks like. Talarico demonstrated exactly why he doesn’t deserve their trust – or their vote.

Key Takeaways

  • Talarico claimed the Bible is “silent” on abortion – a Catholic theology professor destroyed that lie on live TV.
  • His stated beliefs shift depending on the audience – that’s not faith, it’s calculated deception.
  • Ordinary voters at the CNN town hall exposed contradictions Talarico couldn’t explain away.
  • Texas deserves a senator who tells the truth – about policy and about what he actually believes.
