Across America’s biggest cities, a new breed of activist has emerged — one who doesn’t merely demand lower rents or better living conditions, but who wants to abolish the very concept of paying rent. Period. These aren’t desperate families scraping by between paychecks. They’re ideologues with book deals, DSA speaking tours, and Instagram accounts full of revolutionary selfies.

What makes this genuinely alarming isn’t the fringe ideology itself. Radicals have always cluttered the margins of American politics. It’s that elected officials are now handing these people microphones, embedding them in policy, and spending public money to amplify their message. In New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani has done precisely that. And the activist he’s chosen to spotlight may be the most staggering example of left-wing hypocrisy you’ll encounter this year.

Oh — and she hasn’t paid rent in four years. Because she saw a cockroach.

The rent strike that started with a roach

Rosenthal moved into a two-bedroom Bed-Stuy apartment in 2021 at $2,300 a month. Shortly after, she spotted cockroaches. “As soon as I moved in, I realized that we had roaches… and I lost my mind,” she told a Democratic Socialists of America chapter. “I was very angry… it’s really gross.”

Rather than buy a can of Raid, call 311, or pursue the countless legal remedies available to New York tenants, Rosenthal organized her neighbors into a rent strike. She has now stiffed her landlord more than $108,000 on her unit alone. The original building owner — a real person with a real investment — lost the property to foreclosure in 2023. US Bank, the current owner, is suing Rosenthal and four other tenants for eviction, alleging they have “squatted upon the premises.”

Her 2024 book, “Abolish Rent,” lays out the full playbook: organize neighbors, manufacture collective grievances, escalate to rent strikes. The tactics she promotes — and personally employs — include camping outside a landlord’s home, shaming them in front of friends and family, and leaving damaging online reviews. She also advocates crashing landlords’ children’s weddings. Not hypothetically. She actually did it, in Beverly Hills in 2023.

When City Hall becomes the agitator’s megaphone

Here’s where the story shifts from outrageous to genuinely dangerous. The Mamdani administration isn’t just tolerating Rosenthal — it’s actively promoting her. On August 4, the mayor’s office released a city-produced housing documentary prominently featuring her. That same day, Mamdani signed a “Right to Organize” letter echoing her exact tactics.

Meanwhile, the city has funneled $2 billion — yes, billion — into the Alternative Enforcement Program, which the administration wants to weaponize to effectively seize buildings from private owners and transfer control to tenants and nonprofits.

“I consider her to be a saboteur, I consider her to be a gaslighter,” said Stu Smith, investigative analyst at the Manhattan Institute. “And the fact that the Mamdani administration wants to highlight her as a hero speaks to the ethics and morality of the mayor’s office.”

Hard to argue with that assessment. When a city government partners with someone who has never weathered genuine hardship, who attended the Grammys while calling rent “ransom,” and who celebrated her political victories by posting “death to America,” that government has abandoned any pretense of representing all its citizens. Property owners, small landlords, and every taxpayer bankrolling these activist documentaries deserve far better.

Rosenthal is now facing eviction herself. Turns out reality doesn’t bend to ideology — or to your father’s Grammy collection. In America, contracts carry weight, property rights are constitutional, and spotting a cockroach doesn’t entitle you to live on someone else’s dime for half a decade.
