Many people are wondering who will run against Trump. The former president was previously the frontrunner, with few to challenge him. But many things have changed in recent years. And now, a new poll is revealing who might take the crown from old 45.

DeSantis is also well liked by a broad coalition of Republicans with a 68%/0% favorable/unfavorable rating among self-described “Trump Republicans”; 71%/9% among “Traditional Republicans”; and 82%/5% among “Reagan Republicans.”
Woah. It looks like the tide could be turning in the 2024 Republican primary race–before most candidates even entered.
Previously, Trump earned the top spot among most Republicans. His closest rival, Ron DeSantis, was usually much lower in most 2024 polls. But this latest survey, from a well-respected firm with a 95% confidence level, shows the Florida governor is more popular among Trump voters and supporters.
DeSantis won out over those who voted for Trump in 2020, 58-27. Among Republicans, he beat Trump 66-44. DeSantis’s favorability rating is much better than Trump’s in several groups. Even “Trump Republicans” are seeming to come around.
Traditional Republicans and “Reagan Republicans” also seem to like him more than Trump.
On top of that, the poll found that DeSantis is topping Biden among independents and other voters. He has a net favorability of +7, beating Biden’s -21 and Trump’s -36. The poll also discovered that 60% of Republicans believe the party suffered in the 2022 midterms because of Trump.
Former President Trump hasn’t done much to build confidence in the years after he left office. He appeared stuck on attacking the 2020 results and only boosted candidates who agreed with him that the election was rigged. That seemed to only help Biden’s attacks that Republicans are “threats” to our democracy.
Meanwhile, DeSantis won re-election by a landslide and helped all Florida Republicans win big. Many believe his leadership will be needed in 2024 and not Trump’s.
But will most of Trump’s extreme supporters agree with this? I guess we’ll find out as soon as DeSantis announces his race.
