Cracker Barrel’s Disastrous Woke CEO Ousted After $100 Million Rebrand Fiasco

There’s a particular breed of corporate executive — you’ve seen the type — who parachutes into a thriving American brand and immediately decides it needs to be “reimagined.” Translation: gutted. They swap out everything customers actually love for whatever sterile nonsense their consulting firm cooked up over lattes in Manhattan. And then they act stunned when the people who made the brand successful in the first place walk away.

It’s a pattern we’ve watched play out across American business and entertainment for years. Cherished institutions, built over decades by loyal customers, get handed to ideologues who treat that loyalty as a problem to be solved. Usually the damage is permanent. But every now and then, the customers win. This is one of those times.

From Breitbart:

Cracker Barrel CEO Julie Masino will step down as of August 9 and has hopefully been replaced by a CEO who does not hate Cracker Barrel and its customers and will not target kids for grooming.

“Following a robust and thoughtful search process, we are pleased to welcome David [Deno] as Cracker Barrel’s next CEO,” Independent Chairman of the Cracker Barrel Board Carl Berquist said in a statement Monday. “He brings decades of experience across the restaurant and retail industries, with a strong track record of leading businesses through growth and a demonstrated commitment to operational excellence, guest experience, and team member engagement.”

So Julie Masino is out. Let me be direct: this is cause for celebration. The woman spent her tenure systematically dismantling one of America’s most recognizable restaurant brands, and the only surprise is that it took this long.

A $100 million lesson in contempt

Cast your mind back to August 18, 2025. That’s the day Masino’s Cracker Barrel unveiled a shiny new logo that axed “Uncle Herschel” — the man in the rocking chair who’d represented the brand since the 1970s. In his place? A flat, forgettable wordmark that could’ve belonged to a mid-range hotel chain or a dental office. This was the centerpiece of Masino’s “All the More” modernization campaign, which had earmarked between $600 and $700 million for rebranding and remodels. Let that number breathe for a second. Seven hundred million dollars to make Cracker Barrel look like an airport terminal.

America responded accordingly. Within 48 hours, “soulless,” “generic,” and “bland” were trending. The stock cratered 12 to 14 percent in days, vaporizing roughly $100 million in market capitalization. Customer traffic dropped 8 percent. By the December quarter, adjusted EBITDA had nosedived from $45.81 million to a grim $7.19 million.

Then President Trump stepped in. On Truth Social, he wrote that “Cracker Barrel should go back to the old logo, admit a mistake based on customer response (the ultimate Poll), and manage the company better than ever before.” Eight days later, the company capitulated — reversing the rebrand and scrapping planned remodels nationwide. Sometimes all it takes is somebody willing to say what everybody’s thinking.

When “pleasing people” means lecturing them

The logo fiasco, though, wasn’t Masino’s only act of hostility toward the people who actually sit down at Cracker Barrel tables. Under her watch, the company’s internal LGBTQ+ Alliance pushed Pride Month messaging that celebrated the Stonewall Riots and declared it their “greatest Mission to ensure that Pleasing People means ‘all people.'” Cracker Barrel also announced plans to attend Nashville Pride and the Out & Equal Workplace Advocates Conference.

This material got scrubbed quietly — but only after it went public. They weren’t embarrassed by the content. They were embarrassed that customers saw it. There’s a meaningful distinction there. Cracker Barrel’s core audience is traditional, family-oriented Americans who trusted the brand to reflect their values, not undermine them.

“Fired by America”

In a November 2025 sit-down with Glenn Beck, Masino offered a candid — and unintentionally revealing — assessment. “I feel like I’ve been fired by America,” she said.

Hard to argue with that. She took something millions of Americans genuinely loved and tried to reshape it into something she preferred. The market rendered its judgment. Interestingly, shareholders actually voted to retain her that same month. The board took a bit longer to read the room, but reality has a way of catching up.

Breitbart’s John Nolte drew an apt comparison to Kathleen Kennedy — the Lucasfilm chief who torched Star Wars by remaking it in her own ideological image. The key difference? Star Wars might be unsalvageable. Cracker Barrel caught itself before hitting the wall.

David Deno, former Bloomin’ Brands CEO with four decades of restaurant and retail experience, assumes the role August 10. Here’s hoping he grasps the one truth his predecessor never could: the rocking chair belongs on the porch. The customers put it there. Your job is to keep it polished, not drag it to the curb.

Key Takeaways

  • Cracker Barrel’s customers rejected Masino’s woke rebrand — and they won.
  • Masino’s “modernization” erased roughly $100 million in shareholder value.
  • Trump’s direct intervention forced a swift eight-day course correction.
  • Brands that treat their loyal base with contempt eventually pay the price.
