Former DACA Recipient Arrested After Beheading Marine Figure at Quantico’s Iwo Jima Monument

There are places in this country that aren’t just stone and metal. They’re altars. War memorials stand as permanent testimony to young men who stormed beaches and bled out in foreign soil so the rest of us could grow old in freedom. Every weathered bronze face carries the weight of a mother’s telegram she never wanted to open.

So when someone deliberately destroys the likeness of a Marine who fought and died for this nation, it isn’t vandalism. It’s desecration. And what just happened at one of America’s most iconic military monuments should ignite a fury in every patriotic heart still beating.

From the Daily Wire:

An illegal immigrant from Mexico allegedly took a sledgehammer to the famous Iwo Jima monument outside Marine Corps Base Quantico late Wednesday, knocking the head clean off one of the Marines in the famous flag-raising scene.

Prince William County cops caught Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, mid-swing at about 10:15 p.m., pounding away at the limestone memorial with his sledgehammer. Police say the damage will run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Mid-swing. Officers arrived and this guy was still hammering away. One Marine figure – beheaded. A second lost the bayonet from his rifle. A third had his helmet and face gouged and chipped beyond recognition. Restoration experts say repairing the limestone sculpture will be extraordinarily complex, and nobody can even offer a timeline yet. Meanwhile, Maldonado Soriano sits in a cell facing felony charges for destruction of property, injury to a monument, and trespassing. He’s being held without bail.

Good. This man should be deported the moment Virginia is finished with him.

Obama’s ‘Dreamer’ in action

Here’s the part that turns outrage into policy indictment. Federal sources confirmed to Fox News that Maldonado Soriano crossed into the United States illegally in December 1999 as a child. He received DACA protection under Barack Obama in 2014 – that beloved executive amnesty program we were assured would only shelter hardworking, grateful young people who “knew no other country.” Joe Biden’s administration cheerfully renewed his status as recently as 2024. It finally expired this past August when the Trump administration declined to extend it.

A decade of protection. And he repaid this country by beheading a Marine in stone.

White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers put it bluntly: “This criminal illegal alien’s dream is over. Maldonado Soriano disrespected our brave service members and defaced a beautiful monument that honored their sacrifice. President Trump has secured our border and is deporting illegal criminals who hate our country and our values.”

Hate. That’s the right word. You don’t grab a sledgehammer at ten o’clock at night and drive to a Marine base to attack a war memorial because you’re having a rough week. Police haven’t disclosed a motive, but honestly – the act speaks for itself.

The men who never came home

That statue represents something Maldonado Soriano apparently never bothered to learn about. In February 1945, Marines stormed Iwo Jima against 21,000 entrenched Japanese troops hidden in tunnels and bunkers. The battle raged for five weeks. Nearly 7,000 Americans never walked off that volcanic rock.

Three of the six men in that legendary flag-raising photograph died on the island. Sergeant Michael Strank. Corporal Harlon Block. Private First Class Franklin Sousley – nineteen years old. A kid. Gone.

When a 2018 windstorm cracked the statue’s hands, Marines flooded the base with phone calls begging to repair it themselves. One caller’s message was simple: “Send a Gunny and three Marines out there.” That’s love of country. That’s reverence. That’s the precise opposite of a man with a sledgehammer at midnight.

Send him home

Maldonado Soriano has no legal right to be in this country. He had no right to swing that hammer. And he has zero claim to American mercy. Prosecute him to the fullest extent Virginia law allows, then put him on the next southbound flight.

The men immortalized in that statue gave everything – their youth, their bodies, their lives – for a nation they loved. Defending their memory is the bare minimum we owe them.

Key Takeaways

  • An illegal immigrant sledgehammered the iconic Iwo Jima monument, beheading a Marine figure.
  • The suspect was shielded for a decade under Obama and Biden’s DACA program.
  • He must be fully prosecuted under Virginia law and then deported immediately.
  • America’s war memorials honor irreplaceable sacrifice and deserve unwavering protection.
